The frets sit closer together, the reach is shorter and the entire instrument has the compact feel that makes vintage short-scale basses so enjoyable to play.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eThe controls are half the fun\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSitting beneath the black pickguard is a huge chrome mudbucker-style neck pickup, complemented by a smaller chrome bridge pickup.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe control arrangement consists of:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2 × Volume\u003cbr\u003e2 × Tone\u003cbr\u003e3-position rotary selector\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRather than the conventional toggle switch, Sakai fitted a large numbered rotary selector with a chicken-head-style pointer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is exactly the sort of eccentric detail that makes 1970s Japanese instruments so interesting today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eProper Japanese vintage character\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe headstock carries the gold SAKAI logo, while the six-bolt neck plate is stamped:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMADE IN JAPAN\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe transparent cherry finish allows the body grain to remain clearly visible and has aged beautifully.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt isn't pristine — and we wouldn't want it to be.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are small knocks and finish chips around the body edges, scratches and signs of use, together with age-related wear to the pickguard, screws and chrome hardware.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey are the marks of a bass that has it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bass presents as a convincing and substantially period-correct Sakai, and we have provided extensive photographs so collectors can assess the instrument for themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe included fitted black hard case with gold plush interior likewise appears period-correct, but we cannot conclusively establish that it was originally supplied with this exact bass.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eWhy we like it\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause it's weird.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the best possible way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe enormous neck pickup, little bridge pickup, rotary selector, chrome bridge cover, black pickguard, vivid cherry body and tiny scale combine into something with enormous personality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt isn't another Precision Bass.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt isn't another Jazz Bass.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd you're unlikely to walk into the next rehearsal room and discover somebody else holding one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor the Japanese vintage collector, it's an interesting survivor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor the player, it's an exceptionally compact short-scale with a genuinely unusual control layout.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd for somebody who already owns all the obvious basses, this might be exactly
